Four Types of Regenerative Therapy and How Each Differs

One of the greatest benefits of technology advancements is in the medical field. Regenerative therapy is considered an alternative medical procedure and is a great example of how these advancements have enabled the doctors and scientists to find ways to help treat patients for various conditions and possibly save many lives in the process. The goal of regenerative therapy is to aid in replacing damaged cells with healthier stronger cells that will help promote angiogenesis within organs or tissues that have been damaged or injured due to trauma or disease. Although regenerative therapy is still fairly new, many have received promising results. There are different types of regenerative therapy. Let’s discuss four. 

  1. Cartilage Regeneration- This type of regenerative therapy helps people who have musculoskeletal conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and sarcopenia. The goal of this regenerative therapy is to heal damaged cartilage. Cartilage does not heal well without assistance. Some types of cartilage regeneration techniques include:

    1. Osteochondral Grafting

    2. Osteotomy

    3. Osteoarticular Transfer System (OATS) Procedure

  2. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)- PRP uses injections that contain the platelets of the patient to speed up the healing process of damaged tendons, muscles, ligaments, or joints. This treatment is a great way for the body to heal itself and improve musculoskeletal issues. To get the plasma, your doctor will first draw blood. Next, they will put the blood in a special machine that will separate the plasma from the rest of the blood. Finally, the platelet- rich plasma will be reinjected in the area that’s being treated. 

  3. Tissue Regenerative Therapy- Tissue Regenerative Therapy (TRT) is an FDA approved soft wave therapy or sonic wave technology that uses waves to penetrate deep into body tissue, right to the source of the nerve damage. TRT stimulates the body’s natural healing activity, thus making it an ideal, non-invasive treatment choice. TRT helps to stimulate stem cells to regenerate, increasing the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Many TRT patients state they have seen relief from as little as one or two treatments. TRT can help patients decrease pain or return to a pain-free life. TRT also helps patients increase overall quality of life just by enhancing the body’s innate abilities.

  4. Prolotherapy- Prolotherapy (also called proliferation) is a type of regenerative therapy that impacts damaged or injured connective tissue or joints. It can be used to treat whiplash or degenerative disc disease, which happens when one or more discs in the vertebrae begin to deteriorate. Degenerative disc disease is usually related to age. Prolotherapy can also be used on the back, hips, hands, and knees. For prolotherapy, doctors will use a watery, natural irritant that they then inject into the soft tissue of the damaged area.
